I’ve been digging through some deep cuts myself. Check out the 2002 EP *Low‑Budget Soul* by the duo Tighten – they literally recorded on a cheap Roland TB‑303, then mixed it through a reel‑to‑reel tape deck that had a nasty bit of tape hiss but that hiss actually added warmth in a way most remixers just copy and paste. Then there’s *Tape Love* from 2004 by Bureau – they took a looper and a dusty analog synth, but instead of just looping they reversed the tape playback speed at odd intervals, creating this glitchy, almost time‑warped vibe that feels more experimental than just “vintage”. If you want something from a later period, try *Sonic Drip* (2009) by Quietly; they built a distortion pedal from an old vacuum tube and recorded everything on a four‑track cassette, letting the tape run out of its normal range and adding that characteristic “lo‑fi intimacy” while still pushing the limits of the medium. All of those are more than just imitation – they’re actually exploring the quirks of cheap gear and making new music out of it.
